Why Must I be born again?

This may be the question you are asking today.  Along with “Are we not to come ‘Just as we are?’, does God not just forgive and forget?  Is God not such a loving and merciful God that he’ll overlook my sin?”

The answer to the above first question can be easily found simply in the fact of the person giving the statement.  Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us, the true God (1 John 5:20).  God as Son has said: Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3.

The question we may want to ask then is ‘What does it mean to be born again’ or ‘Why does God require us to be born again’.

According to God, the whole world, meaning you and I, have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).  We like sheep have gone astray, every man to his own way (Isaiah 53:6).  No adulterer; nor whoremonger (prostitutes and those that go unto them); nor liars; nor covetous; envious; drunkards; backbiters; disobedient to parents; murderers (in deed and heart); thieves; boasters; those giving into the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16) will enter the kingdom of God.  Without holiness no man shall see God (Hebrews 12:14).

Man and woman have therefore so corrupted their mind and flesh by the indulgence of all manner of sins that now they almost can’t help but sin.  Man is left in such slavery and complete bondage to sin that it is now impossible for him to save himself. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, whosoever committeth sin is the servant (slave) to sin.  His slavery to sin is much like a cigarette or alcohol addiction.  Are addicts born with a craving for cigarette smoke, or a thirst for strong drink?  Of course not, but rather a child from young on detests these harmful substances.  They are contrary to his/her healthy body.  But someone who, by peer pressure or whatever other reason, continually uses them develops a longing for them, and so the sinful man is bound to sin.

God is perfect and holy, and requires that man be perfect and holy as he is.  Your answer like so many others might e:  I know I’ve sinned and not kept God’s standard.  Therefore I’ll try harder, and do better (in your own strength) so I’ll eventually be acceptable to God.

But the word of God says “the carnal mind (focus on physical) is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed CAN BE.” Romans 8:7. To see a carnal man with righteous aspirations, trusting in his own flesh, and yet always coming short of the glory of God –see Romans 7:9-23.

“Who then can be saved, with man it is IMPOSSIBLE but with GOD all things are POSSIBLE.” Mark 10:27.  Therefore we must be born again.  Our lives under our own direction and leading has become infected with sin, like a highly contagious, spreading disease.  This sin has spread too deep that no earthly solution or resolution to right living will help.  This sin has spread too far that no finger, hand, or arm amputation will do.  But the whole sinful flesh needs to be put to death.  “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Romans 8:6

In conclusion, God as a father, has an inheritance laid up for his children.  But we through or sinful deeds have followed the devil and his example and thereby have become his children (John 8:44).  We can only serve one master (Matthew 6:24).  Thus was lost the heirship we had.  Christ because of his perfect and sinless life and humanity became the only rightful heir. But because of his love where with he loved us he longed to share his inheritance with us.  Thanks be unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord, who while we were yet sinners he died for us.  “For ye are all children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26.  God wants to make out of us a new creature.  “as many as received him (Jesus) to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13.  “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” 1 Peter 1:3. “so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death.  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:3-4.  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:  And if children, then heirs; heirs OF GOD, and joint-heirs with Christ.” Romans 8:16-17.  By the grace of God we can become God’s children again.  By grace we are saved, through faith.  Not of works lest anyman should boast.  What must you do to be saved?  Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ with all your heart.  Believe that he died  and atoned for all your sins.  Repent toward God and thus away from all wickedness.  Come unto Jesus all ye that are heavy laden, and he will give you rest.
